What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Gracie-Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art first and foremost that focuses on self defense and is a COMPLETE fighting system.  The practitioner uses superior technique and leverage to control positioning, then applies joint locks or chokeholds to achieve victory over an opponent.  Tysons Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Haganah is part of Team Caique ( Cjjusa.com) under one of a handful of Red Black Belts in the United States of America, Carlos “Caique” Elias. Our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program provides intensive, reality-based training in Jiu Jitsu, the ultimate grappling art.

Classes are small and personalized for you by our founder, Bill Grinnell.  Each class starts with a warm up, stand up techniques, takedowns, escapes, submissions or sweeps, followed by positional drills.  Our curriculum is designed so that you have the chance to learn and hone moves best suited for your body, while committing to muscle memory. A Brief History of Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Know Your Roots, 4 Jiu Jitsu men

In its modern form, “Jiu Jitsu” or “the gentle art,” has origins in Japan where the art was used on the battlefields for close combat. Unlike other forms of martial arts, Jiu Jitsu directs an opponent’s force against themselves rather than challenging with one’s own strength.

At the end of the 19th century, Esai Maeda Koma “Conde Koma,” migrated from Japan to Brazil where he would train a young Carlos Gracie, who would later go on to pioneer Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with his brothers Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., and George and Hélio.  The Gracie family transformed Jiu Jitsu by combining philosophies of life and natural nutrition with modified techniques.  Today, Gracie Jiu Jitsu is a term synonymous with health and Brazil, called “Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.”

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu first achieved recognition as the world’s preeminent grappling art when Royce Gracie (second generation Gracie) won three of the first four Ultimate Fighting Championships despite being the smallest competitor in the tournaments. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu quickly proved so successful in mixed martial arts competition that practically all elite competitors now incorporate Brazilian Jiu Jitsu into their training. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitors also routinely dominate both gi and no-gi grappling tournaments around the world.

Why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu over other Martial Arts?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu emphasizes efficient use of grappling technique and enables the practitioner to overcome much larger, more athletic opponents. The same principles that allowed 170 lb Royce Gracie to defeat world class wrestlers, boxers and kick-boxers weighing up to 280 lbs in the Ultimate Fighting Championships will also work for you.

Learn submissions, chokes, joint locks, grappling, throwing, striking, and how to retain composure in stressful situations, then apply your technique in live sparring. Whether training for competitive Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, self-defense, or simply to get in shape, students find Brazilian Jiu Jitsu amazing, powerful and effective even after a few classes. Irrespective of age, gender, or athleticism, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Basics curriculum at Tysons Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Haganah provides students a progress-oriented learning environment that not only improves fitness and self-defense skills but teaches how to apply the precepts of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to real-life situations.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu provides a new way of thinking; you learn how to defend yourself both on and off the mats.  The improved focus and discipline that results from our training carries over into every aspect of your life. Increased confidence, reduced stress levels, and a greater ability to cope with challenges are only a few of the benefits reported by our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu students.

The advantages of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu curriculum at Tysons Brazilian Jiu Jitsu transcends enhanced fighting and self-defense skills. Practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you embrace the art’s core values including: loyalty, justice, manners, purity, modesty, honor, self-confidence, and respect.

Women’s Self Defense and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Traditional women’s self-defense classes focus on maintaining a “safety zone” and going on high alert when strangers approach in a potentially threatening manner. And certainly, any martial artist will want to remain vigilant when possible.  But women are most often assaulted by men they know, not strangers. The attacker is usually already within close proximity of the intended victim, and the fight will often take place in close quarters, perhaps in a vehicle or while sitting down, where the striking and kicking techniques favored by most self-defense systems are of limited to no value. There’s no room to throw a full force punch and possibly no way to utilize kicks.  That is why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a great martial art for women’s self-defense.  You will learn how to manipulate your opponent in close proximity.

The Tysons Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Advantage

Tysons Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Haganah offers some significant advantages over other Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools in the Northern Virginia and DC Metro area.  The reality is, if you are assaulted on the street or in your home, your attacker won’t bow and make sure you are ready before the fighting starts. You might find yourself facing multiple attackers, and if there’s only one, he’ll probably be larger and stronger–he may even be armed. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training you receive at Tysons Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Haganah prepares you for real-world encounters, not just sporting competitions.

Because while Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will teach you how to defend yourself once a fight gets in the grappling range or on the ground, it also gets you in great shape, builds strength and flexibility, and is pretty darn fun, too.  You Don’t Have To Be A Fighter To Enjoy Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  It doesn’t matter if you are old or young; if you’re big and looking to lose weight or small and looking to build strength; if you’re in shape or out of shape.  It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female or even if you want to compete (or not).  In our program, you don’t need to want to compete; most people who try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu aren’t interested in competition.  ALL are welcome.

Tysons Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes are open to men, women, and children ages 13 and over. Weekly classes run Sundays through Thursdays—see schedule for details.
